About Scundered Studio

I'm Darren, and I've been a software engineer for the better part of twenty years. Most of that time has been in insurance technology, building websites and apps that quietly do their job in the background of millions of people's lives across the UK. I genuinely love what I do.

Scundered Studio is a separate thing entirely. It's where I get to build whatever I've been turning over in my head, on my own time, with no committee, no roadmap I didn't write, and no one to please but the people who actually want to use the thing. If anyone else likes what I make, that's a bonus. If not, I'll still be using it with my mates.

"Scundered" is Northern Irish for mortified. I picked it because I'm Northern Irish, it's a cracking word, and I reckoned it'd look class on a hoody. Then I realised it summed up exactly how I feel about most of what the app industry has become.

I'm not signing up for the grind. Running servers, answering support tickets at three in the morning, building telemetry pipelines, watching growth dashboards. All genuinely hard work, none of it the part I want to spend my evenings on. The first few apps from this studio are offline by design. They collect nothing, don't talk to servers, hold no accounts. No data leaves your device, because there's nowhere for it to go.

That list isn't marketing, it's the spec. The kind of apps I'd want to use myself, with friends and family, or on my own. Content updates land when an app actually needs them, not on a quarterly drip-feed engineered to make a graph go up.

The first game out the door is called Mortified. I named it months before I noticed the English-language definition of "scundered" is, literally, mortified. I'm doing my best to act cool about this.

Why now

Running my own studio has always been a dream of mine, and one I was a bit too cautious to chase for a while. Then I turned forty, and according to my wife this is a textbook mid-life crisis. So here we are.

This policy explains how Scundered Studio Limited handles personal data when you visit scundered.com or use our apps. We've kept it short because we collect very little.

Who we are

Scundered Studio Limited (registered in Northern Ireland, company number NI740378, Ground Floor, Gallery Building, 65–69 Dublin Road, Belfast, BT2 7HG) is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. (UK GDPR Article 13(1)(a).)

What we collect on this website

When you visit scundered.com, we record limited information about your visit through Google Analytics 4 ("GA4"):

Approximate location (country / region . derived from your IP address; we do not store the IP itself)
Device type, screen size, operating system, and browser
Pages viewed and time spent
The website that referred you (if any)
An ephemeral session identifier that lasts only for the current visit

We've configured GA4 in cookieless mode using Google Consent Mode v2 with all defaults set to "denied". This means:

No analytics cookies (_ga, _gid etc.) are set on your device.
No persistent identifier is created . we cannot recognise you across sessions or across devices.
IP addresses are processed only to derive your country/region and are not stored by Google in your visit record.

Our hosting provider (Cloudflare) processes your IP address to deliver the site and to mitigate abuse (for example, blocking bot traffic). Cloudflare retains raw security logs for a short period (typically up to 30 days) and then deletes them.

We do not collect names, email addresses, payment details, or any other directly identifying information through this website. We do not run contact forms, accounts, or e-commerce on this site.

Registering interest in an app

Some of our app pages let you tap "Register your interest" for an app that isn't on a given store yet. When you do, we record that an interest was registered, which app it was for and which platform (Android or iOS), through Google Analytics 4. It's anonymous: no name, no identifier, nothing that points back to you. It only helps us count how many people want an app, so we can decide what to build next.

To avoid counting the same browser twice, we store one small functional flag in your browser's local storage once you've registered. It's a true/false marker, not an identifier, and it never leaves your device. See the Cookie policy for more on local storage.

What we collect through our apps

Each app we publish has its own privacy practices, described in an app-specific section below. As a baseline, none of our apps:

collect data without telling you,
sell your data, or
share your data with advertisers.

If we ever change this baseline, we'll update this policy and flag it on the homepage.

Why we use it

We use website analytics to understand how people find the site and which content is useful, so we can improve it.

Legal basis: legitimate interest under UK GDPR Article 6(1)(f). Our legitimate interest is understanding aggregate site usage to improve the service. We've completed a Legitimate Interests Assessment which concluded the impact on individuals is minimal: the data is anonymous in practice, no profiles are built, and you can object at any time (see "Your rights").

Who we share it with

We use the following service providers (data processors) to operate the site:

We do not sell data, and we do not share it with anyone else.

How long we keep it

Google Analytics retains event data at the shortest available retention period (14 months), after which it is automatically deleted. We do not export, copy, or extend this data into our own systems.

Cloudflare retains security logs for a short period (typically up to 30 days).

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right to:

Access the personal data we hold about you (Article 15)

Because we currently rely on legitimate interest rather than consent, the right to withdraw consent doesn't apply to this site. If we ever rely on consent (for example, for marketing emails) we'll explain it at the point of collection and you'll be able to withdraw it freely.

In practice, because the website data we collect doesn't include a persistent identifier, we may not be able to link your specific records to a request . but we'll always reply.

Children

Our apps and website are not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with data, please email support@scundered.com and we'll delete it.

Security

We use industry-standard measures to protect personal data: TLS for all connections to the site and our apps; regular security updates to our hosting and analytics infrastructure; least-privilege access controls; and a no-export rule for analytics data (we don't copy it out of GA4 into our own systems).

Local storage

If you tap "Register your interest" on one of our app pages, we store one small functional item in your browser's local storage to remember you've already registered, so the button doesn't ask you again. It isn't a cookie, it isn't an identifier, and it never leaves your device. Local storage isn't a cookie and falls outside the cookie rules, but we list it here for transparency.

Video on our app pages

Our Mortified page (/apps/mortified) embeds one gameplay video hosted on YouTube. It is the only third-party content anywhere on this site.

We use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com). In this mode YouTube sets no cookies on your device unless you actually start the video. The player is also loaded lazily, which means your browser does not contact YouTube at all unless you scroll far enough down the page to bring it into view.

If you do press play, YouTube (Google Ireland Limited) will set its own cookies and local-storage entries to deliver and measure playback, and will receive your IP address and device information. That processing is Google's, under Google's privacy policy, and is outside our control. We receive nothing from it: no view data, no identifiers, and no report of who watched.

Because nothing is set until you choose to press play, we do not show a consent banner for it. The player itself only loads once you scroll it into view, so if you never reach it, your browser never contacts YouTube at all.

If we ever introduce non-essential cookies, we'll add a consent banner before they're set, and we'll list each one here.

What can we play with no board games in the house?

Charades, the hat game, two truths and a lie, wink murder and twenty questions all need nothing beyond the people in the room, maybe a pen and paper. If there are phones about, Mortified is free to try: one person downloads it and everyone else joins from a browser, no install.

What party games work for just two players?

Twenty questions and two truths and a lie both survive at two. Mortified has a Casual mode built for two: no scoring, just the scenarios and the laugh. Handy for a night in or a long train.

What can a big group play without buying anything?

Werewolf handles seven to twenty players if somebody will narrate, and wink murder scales to a whole party with no kit at all. With phones, one copy of Mortified covers up to 15 players: one person has the app and the rest join free by QR code.

Do party games work without Wi-Fi or signal?

The classics obviously don't care. Mortified doesn't either: it runs on the host's hotspot with no internet at all, which is why it works in a holiday villa, on a flight, or in the back of the car.

For a decade now, Jackbox has been the default answer to "what'll we play?", and fair play, it earned that. But it assumes a very specific room: a screen everyone can see, internet that holds up, and a group that fits its player caps. This page is for every other room.

Credit where it's due.

Can you play Jackbox-style games without internet?

Jackbox itself needs the internet for phones to join. Games built for local play don't: Mortified runs over the host's wi-fi or a phone hotspot with no internet at all, which is why it survives holiday villas and campsites.

Phone party games, both kinds

"Party games on phones" means two completely different nights, and most lists mash them together. There's the one-phone night, where a single handset does a job for the whole circle. And there's the phone-in-every-hand night, where the game can tell each player something the others can't see. That second one is where it gets interesting.

How many phones have you got?

One phone can be the prompt machine, the referee or the thing on your forehead. Three shapes that work:

How to play
1. One player holds the phone flat against their forehead, screen out, showing a word.
2. The circle shouts clues or acts it out; the holder guesses as many as they can before the timer.
3. Pass the phone left. Highest count after a full lap wins. Any word app or a notes list works.

1. One person takes the phone and the power. Five questions a round, any topic they fancy.
2. Everyone else answers on paper, or on their honour, out loud.
3. Rotate the quizmaster each round so the smug is evenly distributed.

Once everyone's on their own phone, the game can keep secrets: who the impostor is, what you answered, which word you got. That unlocks the whole hidden-role and anonymous-answer genre, the stuff a single shared screen can never do. The classic twenty-minutes-of-peace move: deal a scavenger hunt list, pair the wee ones with the big ones, and judge the haul at the kitchen table with full ceremony. Works in a garden, a park, or (rainy day rules) entirely indoors.

Three rules from hard experience. Pick games where knowing more doesn't always win, acting and bluffing beat trivia across generations. Rig categories toward the youngest, they'll never notice and the game gets funnier. And stop one game earlier than you think, a night that ends wanting more happens again next week.

What games can grandparents and kids play together?

What if the kids are wildly different ages?

Pair the wee ones with an adult as a team, and pick categories the youngest owns. Sardines and Simon says absorb any age gap; save the sitting-down games for after the wee ones have burned off the fizz.

Do we need to buy anything for a family game night?

How long should a family game night run?

Camping games: you packed everything except the entertainment

The tent's up, the food's eaten, and it's 8:40pm with no telly, no wi-fi and one bar of signal that comes and goes with the wind. Perfect. The best camping games were designed for exactly this century-old situation, and the one modern option on this page needs no signal either.

1. A narrator secretly assigns two werewolves; the rest are villagers.

A scavenger hunt is twenty minutes of peace for the adults: deal a list of ten finds below, send everyone out in pairs, then judge the haul back at the table with full pomp. Tap each find off as it lands. Rounders, french cricket or boules with pinecones if anyone packed nothing but enthusiasm.
