SCUNDEREDSTUDIO

scundered
adj. /ˈskʌn.dəd/ Northern Irish · Ulster Scots -
Northern Irish (and Ulster Scots) for mortified, embarrassed, affronted. The feeling of catching yourself in a moment you'd rather not be in.
How you'd use it
Said "you too" when the waiter said "enjoy your meal".
Said "love you" hanging up to the GP receptionist.
Called the teacher "mum".
Waved at my own reflection in a shop window.
Asked when the baby was due. There was no baby.
Where it comes from
"Scundered" comes from the Ulster Scots tradition, alive across Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland. The Scots variant scunnered tilts more towards "fed up" or "sick of". The Northern Irish reading leans into mortification, the specific kind that makes you wish you could be folded into the carpet. Related to scunner, a strong feeling of disgust or annoyance, which still does the rounds in everyday speech.
Why a studio called Scundered
Short version: it's a brilliant word, it's from where I'm from, and it captures how I feel about most of what the app industry has become. The longer version is on the about page.
SCUNDEREDSTUDIO
About
I'm Darren, and I've been a software engineer for the better part of twenty years. Most of that time has been in insurance technology, building websites and apps that quietly do their job in the background of millions of people's lives across the UK. I genuinely love what I do.
Scundered Studio is a separate thing entirely. It's where I get to build whatever I've been turning over in my head, on my own time, with no committee, no roadmap I didn't write, and no one to please but the people who actually want to use the thing. If anyone else likes what I make, that's a bonus. If not, I'll still be using it with my mates.
"Scundered" is Northern Irish for mortified. I picked it because I'm Northern Irish, it's a cracking word, and I reckoned it'd look class on a hoody. Then I realised it summed up exactly how I feel about most of what the app industry has become.
I'm not signing up for the grind. Running servers, answering support tickets at three in the morning, building telemetry pipelines, watching growth dashboards. All genuinely hard work, none of it the part I want to spend my evenings on. The first few apps from this studio are offline by design. They collect nothing, don't talk to servers, hold no accounts. No data leaves your device, because there's nowhere for it to go.
What I build at Scundered
Apps and party games. Coming to Google Play first. I'll get to iOS. One fair price up front. No micro-transactions, no advertising, no data sold, no AI trained on you. Party games meant to be played in the same room with your mates, not over a headset on a Discord call. Tools that do one thing properly. The kind of apps I'd want to use myself, with friends and family, or on my own.
Content updates land when an app actually needs them, not on a quarterly drip-feed engineered to make a graph go up.
One more thing
The first game out the door is called Mortified. I named it months before I noticed the English-language definition of "scundered" is, literally, mortified. I'm doing my best to act cool about this.
Why now
Running my own studio has always been a dream of mine, and one I was a bit too cautious to chase for a while. Then I turned forty, and according to my wife this is a textbook mid-life crisis. So here we are.

Privacy policy

- — v1.0 — initial publication.
This policy explains how Scundered Studio Limited handles personal data when you visit scundered.com or use our apps. We've kept it short because we collect very little.
Who we are
Scundered Studio Limited (registered in Northern Ireland, company number NI740378, Ground Floor, Gallery Building, 65–69 Dublin Road, Belfast, BT2 7HG) is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. (UK GDPR Article 13(1)(a).)
For privacy queries, contact support@scundered.com.
What we collect on this website
When you visit scundered.com, we record limited information about your visit through Google Analytics 4 ("GA4"):
- Approximate location (country / region . derived from your IP address; we do not store the IP itself)
- Device type, screen size, operating system, and browser
- Pages viewed and time spent
- The website that referred you (if any)
- An ephemeral session identifier that lasts only for the current visit
We've configured GA4 in cookieless mode using Google Consent Mode v2 with all defaults set to "denied". This means:
- No analytics cookies (
_ga,_gidetc.) are set on your device. - No persistent identifier is created . we cannot recognise you across sessions or across devices.
- IP addresses are processed only to derive your country/region and are not stored by Google in your visit record.
Our hosting provider (Cloudflare) processes your IP address to deliver the site and to mitigate abuse (for example, blocking bot traffic). Cloudflare retains raw security logs for a short period (typically up to 30 days) and then deletes them.
We do not collect names, email addresses, payment details, or any other directly identifying information through this website. We do not run contact forms, accounts, or e-commerce on this site.
What we collect through our apps
Each app we publish has its own privacy practices, described in an app-specific section below. As a baseline, none of our apps:
- collect data without telling you,
- sell your data, or
- share your data with advertisers.
If we ever change this baseline, we'll update this policy and flag it on the homepage.
Why we use it
We use website analytics to understand how people find the site and which content is useful, so we can improve it.
Legal basis: legitimate interest under UK GDPR Article 6(1)(f). Our legitimate interest is understanding aggregate site usage to improve the service. We've completed a Legitimate Interests Assessment which concluded the impact on individuals is minimal: the data is anonymous in practice, no profiles are built, and you can object at any time (see "Your rights").
Who we share it with
We use the following service providers (data processors) to operate the site:
| Provider | Role | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare, Inc. | Website hosting, security, edge delivery | Global edge network; corporate HQ in the United States |
| Google LLC | Analytics (Google Analytics 4) | United States |
Both providers are bound by their own data processing terms (DPAs) under UK GDPR Article 28.
Transfers to the United States. Where personal data is transferred to the US, we rely on:
- Google LLC.the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework ("UK–US Data Bridge"), under which the UK Government has determined that DPF-certified US organisations provide an adequate level of data protection. Google LLC is DPF-certified . verify on the DPF list. (UK adequacy regulations under s.17A DPA 2018.)
- Cloudflare, Inc..the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses (UK IDTA), executed as part of Cloudflare's Data Processing Addendum. (UK GDPR Article 46(2)(c).)
We do not sell data, and we do not share it with anyone else.
How long we keep it
Google Analytics retains event data at the shortest available retention period (14 months), after which it is automatically deleted. We do not export, copy, or extend this data into our own systems.
Cloudflare retains security logs for a short period (typically up to 30 days).
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you (Article 15)
- Ask us to correct inaccurate data (Article 16)
- Ask us to delete your data (Article 17)
- Object to our processing (Article 21)
- Restrict processing (Article 18)
- Receive your data in a portable format (Article 20)
- Lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (Article 77 . see "Complaints" below)
Because we currently rely on legitimate interest rather than consent, the right to withdraw consent doesn't apply to this site. If we ever rely on consent (for example, for marketing emails) we'll explain it at the point of collection and you'll be able to withdraw it freely.
To exercise any of these rights, email support@scundered.com. We'll respond within one month.
In practice, because the website data we collect doesn't include a persistent identifier, we may not be able to link your specific records to a request . but we'll always reply.
Children
Our apps and website are not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with data, please email support@scundered.com and we'll delete it.
Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect personal data: TLS for all connections to the site and our apps; regular security updates to our hosting and analytics infrastructure; least-privilege access controls; and a no-export rule for analytics data (we don't copy it out of GA4 into our own systems).
Complaints
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO):
- Website: ico.org.uk
- Helpline: 0303 123 1113
We'd appreciate the chance to address your concern first . please email us before going to the ICO.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we'll update the "Last updated" date and version above. Material changes will be flagged on the homepage for at least 30 days.
Per-app privacy policies
Each app has its own privacy policy because each one handles data slightly differently. The summary above applies to scundered.com itself; the linked policies cover each app.

Cookies set by this website
We've designed scundered.com to use no non-essential cookies.
The only cookies that may be set are strictly necessary for the security and delivery of the site:

Mortified
The dignity-shedding chat game.
It's your name on the screen. The rest of the room is already writing the worst thing they can about you. You're writing one too. Nobody finds out who wrote what until the room's already laughed.
Every scenario names one of you.
Every prompt has a real player's name dropped in live, picked round-robin from whoever's in the room. The host's in the rotation along with everyone else. There's no hiding behind a generic question.
Why [Player]'s neighbours stopped saying hello.
Why Conor's neighbours stopped saying hello.
Next round it'll be Holly. Round after, Tom. The spotlight moves until everyone in the room has been under it.
A round, top to bottom.
- Host opens the app. A QR code goes up.
- Room joins. Scan with any phone, tablet, or laptop. No install.
- Scenario drops, with a name. The named player gets it too. They're in the room, they're writing one.
- Everyone writes. The worst answer they can think of. Reveal is simultaneous and anonymous.
- Vote with nods. Three a round by default. Most nods wins.
- Authors revealed. Too late to deny anything.
What you'll get asked.
Real prompts from the packs, with names plugged in the way they'd appear in a real game.
Prompts are written neutral. The mortification is whatever your friends are willing to put under them.
Fifteen packs.
Host picks before kick-off. Mix as many as you like, or type your own live.

The host runs the app. Everyone else plays from a browser, on whatever they have in their hand. iPhone, Android, an old tablet, a laptop somebody left on the table. Same Wi-Fi as the host, or the host's own hotspot if there's no Wi-Fi. Nothing leaves the host's device. The room dies when the host closes the app.
Privacy

Camo
The Chameleon & Salamander Game.
Everyone sees a secret word from a shared theme. Except the Chameleon, who sees nothing and has to bluff. And the Salamander, who sees a different word from the same theme and doesn't know they're wrong.
One round, three kinds of player.
Pick a theme. The app deals roles in secret. Most of the room knows what's going on. Two of you don't, in different ways.
Sees the secret word. Drops a clue that proves they know it, without giving it away.
Sees a different word from the same theme. Thinks they're playing normally. Their clues sound subtly off, and they don't know why.
Sees no word at all, just a note that says bluff it. Has to sound like they know.
A round, top to bottom.
- Host picks themes. A QR code goes up.
- Room joins. Scan with any phone or tablet. No install.
- Tap to peek. Your card flips and shows your role.
- One word each. Round the table. Prove you know without telling.
- Vote. Who didn't know? The room picks.
- The catch. Got the Chameleon? They get one guess. Right and they steal the round.
Sample words from the packs.
The theme is shared. The word is not.
38 packs across seven categories.
Pick one. Pick five. Mix as many as you like.
